UserCloaks are available on OFTC only for those who present a compelling reason.

user.oftc.net

OFTC does not provide vanity hostmasks, all cloaks except for Staff come in the form of

<nick>.user.oftc.net

Visit the Staff page to identify staff and their cloaks.

Services Based

Cloaks are provided via services, no exceptions; for any cloak to take effect you must identify with services first.

Activating Your Cloak

Currently the ability for a user to turn his cloak on and off at will is not enabled.

(Not) Protecting Your Identity

Cloaks on OFTC are not a means of protecting your identity, and sometimes not even your IP. Since cloaks are services based there is a window where your information is public.

OFTC Policy

OFTC currently issues user cloaks to those with compelling reasons, however the right to change this policy is retained by OFTC, therefore user cloaks may be revoked at any point either on a user basis or network wide.

Staff Discussion

Not all staff think user cloaks are appropriate for anything beyond allowing users to easily identify Staff. Also NetOps can see through user cloaks to effectively administer the network, therefore a cloak won't protect you if you're abusing the network.

Requesting A Cloak

Each and every request is reviewed on a case by case basis, and the right to issue or revoke a cloak at any time for any purpose is reserved by OFTC. For your request to be approved you must present a compelling reason that goes beyond: "it's cool" or "I'm vain". Compelling reasons are like obscenities, we know them when we see them.

Your request with your services info (registered nickname) and compelling reason may be sent to <cloakrequest PLEASE DO NOT SPAM US AT oftc DOT net> you will receive a response within 48 hours, pressuring staff for an answer will not expedite the process or cast favor on your request.
